Category, Stantec Architecture Ltd., Stantec Regina Office Fit-up President's Message As IDA Council members we are often asked, “Where do my IDA membership dollars go?” Obviously, this is a critical question – we can’t succeed unless we provide excellent value to our current and future members. We are always working hard to better communicate our initiatives and create new ones. One of these is scholarships for Alberta post-secondary interior design students.
Over the past month, we have finalized the details for the new IDA scholarship at Mount Royal University. We are excited to announce that we are now awarding an annual $1,500 prize to an MRU ID student in the second, third, or fourth year of their program. The previous amount was $500 per year, so this is a significant increase, intended to make a real difference for the recipient.
More importantly, we have updated the criteria to determine who receives the prize, to place an emphasis on students who have shown leadership during their time in school, and who have a vision for the future. Applicants will be asked to write one paragraph that responds to the question, “How might you contribute to the growth and success of the interior design profession, now or in the future”. Of course, we are excited to hear the great ideas that will surely be submitted. However, we also want to plant the seed in these students that they have a role to play in the success of our industry.
(Note that council is also currently updating the amount and criteria for the IDA scholarships to NAIT Interior Design Technology students, and we’ll likely take a similar approach for that program.)
My favourite Gandhi quote is “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”. Many of the challenges that plague our industry – lack of understanding of our professional role and capabilities, downward pressure on fees, unrealistic expectations due to media representations of interior design projects – can only be solved by working together to speak more loudly with a common voice. Your membership dollars give us the power to do that.
I believe that one of the most important roles that IDA can play is to welcome new members to our industry, to give them the knowledge that there is support available to them – but, just as importantly, to reinforce their responsibility in giving back to the community as their careers grow. I hope you’ll agree that these are worthwhile outlets for a portion of your membership dollars.
That being said, we’re always happy to receive any feedback or suggestions from members on our programs! You can reach me directly at president@idalberta.ca.
