President's Message
A call to action!
As we approach IDA's upcoming Annual General Meeting, I would like to welcome Louise Aroche, the incoming IDA President, and send my heartfelt thanks to all the members who will be retiring from Council: Cory Riley (past president), Mei Wu (secretary/treasurer), Umid Abdullaev (intern representative), Dee Leibel (public member) and Carly Dick (student representative). It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you all, and I am so grateful for your contributions.
An ongoing flow of new volunteers is critical for the health of any organization; I hope you will see the ways you can play a pivotal part in the current and future success of the IDA. We are actively looking for new members to join us at the Council table and on specific committees targeting new initiatives. Maybe you've always thought about getting involved but weren't sure what the time commitment would be like?
Council meetings take place about every 6 weeks, or 9 times per year. In addition, we hold a half-day strategic planning session in the fall, and an AGM in the spring. That means a commitment of around 25-30 hours over the course of 12 months. That seems manageable, doesn't it? Of course, there are always opportunities to get involved on other committees or with special events - but this isn't required. Please don't let a fear of the time commitment get in the way of you getting involved.
Plus - did you know that you can use participation on council or committees towards your continuing education requirements for both IDA (up to three hours per two-year cycle) and AAA (up to 25 hours per cycle)?
Still need more convincing? If you have ever thought the following, you should really consider getting involved:
Read further for the information on positions we are looking to fill - positions listed under the Volunteer section of the Bulletin. Keep in mind that voting Council positions require Registered or Associate members only, while non-voting and committee positions are available to student and intern members as well. You can nominate yourself prior to the meeting, or speak up during the meeting, if you are interested in a position.
Thank you for your support during my time as President, and I look forward to connecting one more time at the AGM on April 14.

Kerri Peyton IDA President Member Matters WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS Lindsay Douma | Student
2020 recipient of the Interior Designers of Alberta Scholarship is Madelaine Podborski. Q&A with Madelaine I chose to become a student member of the IDA as I think it is important to become part of the design community early on, as the community in Calgary is small and making connections with other designers and people in the industry is very valuable. I also want to be a part of the association that is helping shape the future of design in Alberta, and be a part of the conversation that is happening around it.
The most valuable element so far of being a student member of the IDA is staying up to date with all the virtual events that are happening throughout the year. It affords the opportunity to attend seminars and virtual events to expand my knowledge base and to stay up to date with the discussions happening within the design community. Currently, my plan post-graduation is to stay in Calgary and work within the industry. I'm in the process of completing my second of four years and have not yet decided on which facet of design inspires me the most. Currently I am looking at residential or hospitality, and am planning to get work experience this summer to further inform my decisions going forward.
A top priority for the IDA for me is maintaining and further explaining the delineation between an interior designer and an interior decorator. I think it would be wonderful to see some regulation around the use of the term "interior designer" within the industry, as this would further support those who are, or are in the process of becoming, a registered Interior Designer or who have graduated from an Interior Design program.
Continuing education strengthens the interior design profession by improving individual attitudes, competencies, knowledge and skills in specific subject areas essential to interior design. Learning experiences focus on the individual and involve activities that encompass thinking, doing and reflection.
CEUs can be tracked and reported on-line via the IDCEC (Interior Design Continuing Education Council) website or the new IDCEC mobile app.
The current reporting cycle is January 1st, 2019 to December 31st, 2021. Please join us online to connect with your IDA community and engage in the annual elections A BIG SHOUT OUT TO OUR EVENT SPONSOR:
Celeste Thiesen, James Renouf and Jenny Appleby of AGM attendees will be entered to win two gift basket prizes donated by Shaw Contract Alberta.

Member FYIs INACTIVE MEMBERS AND INSURANCE
If you are considering leaving the workforce for a period of time, the IDA is able to offer you an Inactive membership. Inactive Members are able to seamless return to their previous membership status without having to re-apply and without having to meet any new standards for membership that have come in to force since you became a Member. Membership fees are reduced allow you are able to keep in touch with the profession until your return to work.
Inactive Members are required to carry professional liability insurance as a condition of membership because they still bear responsibility towards the projects that they have completed prior to their transfer to Inactive membership.
Current insurance policies can be amended to an Extended Reporting Policy by notification to your insurance carrier. ERPs are renewed annually; the cost and time limits may vary from carrier to carrier. Prolink Insurance, the IDA policy carrier, offers Extended Reporting Policies to their existing customers at no cost but other carriers may have different conditions.
When an Inactive Member returns to interior design work, the carrier will require notice so that insurance can be reactivated for future projects. Gold masi Award recipient | Retail Design Clare Mackey of Mackey Design Group Pharm Drugstore
